Responsibilities

I joined GitLab to lead the Personal Productivity & Design System teams. While both of these teams were focused on the cross-platform user experience, the Personal Productivity team centered on end users, while the Design System team focused on internal users.

I spent most of my attention on the Personal Productivity team, as it had significant opportunity to dramatically improve the experience of the product. Our goal was to manage the growing complexity of the product, with a long-term vision of making every user feel like a power user. We did this by focusing on parts of the experience that sit "above" the marquee features of the product, like navigation, notifications, and the homepage.

Some highlights from my time in this role include:

  • Brought focused product strategy to teams that were entirely reactive, leading to increased velocity and more satisfied team members
  • Coordinated work across dozens of teams to bring GitLab's top user-requested feature - dark mode - to GA
  • Introduced user-centric data analytics like feature-based user retention and page flow diagrams to drive product decisions
  • Conducted initial product discovery into cross-cutting areas of the product to improve the quality of the day-to-day customer experience, resulting in a problem-focused roadmap centered around navigation, notifications, and the homepage experience

Data analysis

Introduced user-centric data analytics like feature-based user retention and page flow diagrams to drive product decisions. Both of these visualizations required heavy processing of usage event data via SQL, Python, and JavaScript.
